Money Matters: FAQs

Understanding currency exchange and payment methods is crucial for your trip. Here are answers to common questions about buying pesos, current exchange rates, and using cards in Mexico.

Getting Pesos

In the airport, there are Casas de Cambio (exchange houses) and ATMs near the International Arrivals gate.

Several banks in central Tlaquepaque have ATMs. The exchange rate at ATMs is generally good, but there is a daily withdrawal limit (usually $3,000 to $6,000 pesos).

*Important: The amount indicated on ATM screens is in Pesos ($), not Dollars.

Banking Tips

  • You should notify your own bank that you will be using your debit or credit card in Mexico to avoid blocks.
  • Check the current exchange rates online before you go.
  • Ask your bank about international banking fees and interest rates.

Credit & Debit Cards

Note that except for ATMs, banks, and some of the more expensive stores and restaurants, most merchants do not accept credit or debit cards. Cash is king for street food and small crafts.

Additionally, the exchange rate offered by individual businesses may be less favorable than ATMs, and card fraud can happen, so exercise caution.
